Zurich is a beautiful lakeside city and international centre of banking and industry. It is one of the world’s largest gold markets, has one of the most important stock exchanges in the world and enjoys a prestigious position in international banking. All of these things make it the richest city in Switzerland, and it also enjoys a wealth of culture and art. Scweizerisches Landesmuseum (Swiss National Museum) focuses on the history of the country and its customs, while the Museum fur Gestaltung is specialises in architecture, graphic art, industrial design and the applied arts. You will also find your share of upmarket shopping in Bahnhofstrasse.
Although Lucerne is central Switzerland’s largest city, it can easily be explored by foot and you can enjoy the traditional facades and painted houses on a walk of the Old Town. Included in its attractions are the Transport Museum, dedicated to every mode of transport from the bicycle to mountain cable cars it is the most extensive in Europe. There is also an excellent collection of modernist paintings, including Paul Klee and Picasso, at the Rosengart Museum. Its location also offer excellent access to the Alps, including a favourite of the locals, the trek up Mount Rigi. Travel by cable car and mountain railway for a panoramic view over the Alps that includes the thirteen lakes that surround you as well as the breathtaking mountains.
At the foot of the Matterhorn, Zermatt is one of Switzerland’s most popular and famous resorts. In the wintertime it is a haven for skiers and in the summertime, it is a mecca for mountaineering enthusiasts. Even if you are not a mountain climber, you can easily ascend the lower slopes by cable car. The Alpines Museum in Zermatt tells the history of mountaineering in the area. Closed to motorised traffic, Zermatt is testimony to Switzerland’s commitment to the green living.
Located in Bernese Oberland, Grindelwald is the village located just south of the magnificent Eiger, a mountain whose north face tells a story of adventure and peril in the climbers who have scaled its sheer cliff. Almost as impressive is the engineering of the Jungfraujoch, a railway that literally cuts through the mountain and on its way to the highest rail station in Europe. From there be amongst the clouds and glaciers for an unforgettable and unique experience.
Located in the Eastern region of Switzerland, Appenzell Ausserrhoden offers a place to enjoy strong folk traditions and immaculate, unspoilt natural scenery. Here farming is one of the main industries and the region is known for its cattle breeding and dairy products, especially cheese and in Stein you can visit the cheese factory where they make Appenzeller cheese. The village of Urnasch offers a museum of local folk museum which includes reconstructed farmhouse interiors, national costumes and craft items.
The Rhine Falls are the largest waterfalls in Europe. They are only 75 feet high, but almost 500 feet wide making them a awe inspiring sight as the water cascade in torrents amongst tree covered banks. The best views are aboard a boat beneath the falls, or from Schloss Laufen, a castle overlooking the River Rhine. Located just 3 miles above the waterfalls, Schaffhausen was the place where boatmen would unload their cargo making it a principle place of trade from the Middle Ages. Now you can enjoy the Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo buildings that grace its Old Town.
