Renowned for its monuments, magnificent walls and welcoming atmosphere, Dubrovnik is Dalmatia’s top international tourist destination. Although the city was the target of relentless bombing between 1991 and 1992, it has since been restored to its former glory as “The Pearl of the Adriatic”. Take a walking tour of the historic centre, its Franciscan monastery and the cities defensive walls for views into the city with a local guide
Today we continue to explore the gems of Dubrovnik including its 14th century Dominican monastery and the Renaissance Sponza Palace. Continue on to the Rector’s Palace which includes a Museum of Dubrovnik, which explores the city’s history through furniture and paintings. Finally we visit the cathedral whose treasury of gold and silver artefacts is known throughout the entire Adriatic Region.
Today Split is a busy port city, but nestled in its centre is the old town which originally grew up around the Emperor Diocletians vast Roman palaces, which is one of the largest and best preserved left form the Roman World. We visit the imposing palace with a local guide as well as the magnificent Cathedral of St Domnius, which was once Diocletian’s mausoleum.
Take a ferry to the island of Hvar, best known for its medieval buildings, a legacy of four centuries of Venetian rule. Art treasures, limestone hills, and lavender make this the perfect island getaway. We visit the Spanjo Fortress, perched high on a hill overlooking the town, for breathtaking views from the summit before travelling onto Stari Grad. Originally known as Pharos, among its attractions are ruins of a Roman Villa and the Kastel Tvrdalj, a fortified house with fishponds and a collection of local artifacts.
Today we visit Trogir, a UNESCO world Heritage site, originally settled in 380 BC and now a treasure of architectural delights and details. We enjoy a walking tour with local guide exploring the glory of this city was an important city for the arts under Hungarian and Venetian rule. We also visit the ancient city of Salona on the outskirts of Split.
Today we visit an area of outstanding natural beauty the Krka National Park, land of lakes and dramatic waterfalls. Feel the mist as you walk on paths that take you to the Skradinski Buk, an impressive waterfall that cascades down. Then onto Sibenik where we enjoy the delights of this coastal town, including the cathedral of St James.
A jewel of a town, Zadar has a real Mediterranean feel. Enjoy a walking tour of the historical city, including the 9th century church of St Donat (Sv Donat), one of the largest examples of Byzantine architecture in Dalmatia. We also visit the exhibition: “The Gold and Silver of Zadar” with thousands of valuable treasures. In the afternoon, we visit the island of Pag, with its harsh and fascinating landscapes.
